About The Keris Collector

A collector-led cultural practice built around objects, evidence and the stories connecting them to people and place.

Our Story

The Keris Collector began with collecting.

Pak JoFe started collecting kerises in 1997, long before social media turned every object into instant content.

The collection grew. So did the questions.

Where was an object made? Who might have carried it? Why does one region construct or dress a keris differently from another? Which stories are supported by evidence, and which have simply been repeated often enough to sound authoritative?

Those questions gradually expanded The Keris Collector from a private collecting journey into a public platform for research, education, cultural interpretation and conversation.

Today, The Keris Collector works across objects, places, heritage experiences, advisory projects, talks, media and original research.

The keris remains our foundation.

But the larger subject has always been culture.

Preserve Through Discovery

Preservation is not simply keeping an old object intact.

An object without context can survive physically while its meaning disappears.

We believe preservation begins by asking questions.

How was something made? Why did it matter? Who used it? What evidence survives? How have later generations reinterpreted it?

Discovery gives preservation depth.

That principle sits behind everything The Keris Collector does.

What We Do

Objects & Research

We study kerises and related material culture through close observation, historical sources, comparative material and continuing research.

Heritage Experiences

We create small-group and private experiences connecting Singapore’s places with people, objects and historical forces.

Collector Advisory

We provide contextual research and experienced perspectives for private collectors and those seeking to understand objects in their possession.

Production Advisory

We support media, publishing, exhibitions and creative projects requiring deeper understanding of keris, traditional arms and related cultural material.

Talks & Workshops

We develop talks and learning experiences for organisations, institutions and private groups.

Collaboration

We welcome serious collaboration with researchers, museums, heritage organisations, educators and cultural practitioners.

How We Approach Heritage

Look Closely

The smallest construction detail can change how an object is understood.

Separate Observation From Interpretation

What we can physically observe is not always the same as what we believe it means.

Respect Tradition Without Suspending Evidence

Beliefs, oral traditions and inherited stories deserve to be documented faithfully.

Historical and scientific claims still require evidence.

Put Objects Back Into Context

Objects make more sense when placed alongside people, geography, trade, politics and everyday life.

Admit What We Do Not Know

Uncertainty is sometimes the most accurate answer available.

Make Knowledge Useful

Research matters more when people can understand it, question it and carry it forward.

Based In Singapore, Connected To The Region

The Keris Collector is based in Singapore and works from a distinctly Singaporean position within the wider Malay and Southeast Asian cultural landscape.

Singapore’s history has never existed in isolation.

Its people, objects, trade and ideas have long been connected to Johor, Riau, the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi and wider regional networks.

Understanding those relationships helps us understand Singapore itself more clearly.
