Cultural & Production Advisory

Getting the object right can change the entire scene.

The Keris Collector supports film, television, publishing, exhibition, media and creative projects requiring contextual understanding of keris, traditional arms, material culture and related heritage.

A small detail can affect credibility.

The wrong object. The wrong term. The wrong regional association. A prop that looks convincing to most viewers but makes no sense to someone familiar with the culture.

Good consultation helps identify those problems before they become part of the finished work.

Why Material Culture Matters

Historical objects are not neutral decoration.

A keris, hilt, sheath, textile, item of dress or ceremonial object may carry information about region, period, identity, status, craftsmanship and use.

When those details are wrong, audiences may not always know exactly why something feels wrong.

But they notice.

Cultural consultation helps make those details more coherent, while also giving producers, writers and designers richer material to work with.

How We Can Help

Material Culture Review

Review objects, visual references and proposed depictions for cultural and contextual consistency.

Terminology Review

Check names, descriptions and culturally specific terms for clarity and appropriate use.

Historical Context

Provide background research and interpretive context relevant to a scene, article, exhibition or production.

Script Contextualisation

Review scenes or passages where objects, collecting practices, history or cultural claims form part of the story.

Prop & Object Review

Assess whether an object is appropriate to the setting, period, region or role intended.

Visual Reference Support

Help identify stronger reference material for artists, designers, writers and production teams.

Earlier Is Better

Cultural consultation is most useful before the visual language, props or script are fully locked.

It is easier to correct a weak reference during development than after filming, fabrication or publication.

The Keris Collector can be consulted during:

  • research,
  • concept development,
  • script development,
  • pre-production,
  • prop selection,
  • visual design,
  • filming,
  • editing,
  • exhibition development,
  • or final cultural review.

What We Review

Depending on the engagement, material may include:

  • scripts
  • storyboards
  • prop references
  • photographs
  • object images
  • costume references
  • exhibition text
  • captions
  • research notes
  • articles
  • mood boards
  • visual concepts
  • production briefs

The objective is not to take over the creative process.

It is to help the project avoid preventable cultural and material inconsistencies.

What Advisory Does Not Mean

Cultural consultation does not automatically establish historical fact.

Where evidence is uncertain, contested or incomplete, that uncertainty should remain visible.

We do not invent provenance, confirm unsupported historical associations or present speculation as established fact simply because a production requires a neat answer.

Where legal, conservation, linguistic or other highly specialised expertise is required beyond our area of practice, we may recommend an appropriate specialist.

How Engagements Work

1. Tell Us About The Project

Provide a short brief, intended audience, relevant period and cultural context.

2. Share The Material

Where appropriate, provide scripts, images, references or production material for review.

3. Define The Deliverable

We agree on the required level of involvement, output and timeline.

All work is scoped according to project requirements, complexity and intended use.

Possible Deliverables

Depending on scope, advisory may include:

  • written comments
  • reference notes
  • annotated material
  • video or call consultation
  • research direction
  • object or prop review
  • terminology review
  • production meeting
  • on-site or on-set consultation
  • final cultural review

Your Advisor

Cultural & Production Advisory is led by Khairi Johari, better known as Pak JoFe, founder of The Keris Collector.

A keris collector since 1997, Pak JoFe’s work spans material culture, research, heritage interpretation, media and public education.

He has also worked with media and cultural projects where specialist knowledge of the keris and related heritage contributed to the finished production.

His approach is straightforward:

understand what the project is trying to say, then make sure the objects and cultural details support it rather than undermine it.
